THE POWER OF HOPE

Short Documentary • 6 mins.

The Power of Hope was created for the Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) to answer two questions at once: what does BSCP do, and why does it matter? Rather than explain a mission, we built an anthology. Thirteen voices span the program’s founder and executive director, students and alumni, mentors and mentees, across generations and scientific disciplines. At its center are four mentor-mentee pairs whose relationships changed both people. Together they show that BSCP is more than programming. It is a community woven across decades, one that carries each new scientist toward a future still being written.

DIRECTOR’S Notes:

I wanted viewers to have two reactions in quick succession: “Oh, now I understand.” And then, simply, “Wow.” An anthology let us hold breadth and intimacy at the same time, and do it on a nonprofit’s budget without shortchanging an organization this ambitious. The four pairs at the heart of the film were chosen because each relationship has lasted years and shaped both lives. Those stories show that BSCP isn’t something people pass through. Rather, it’s a community they become part of.

The hardest part was what we left out. Seven and a half hours of interviews held far more than one short film could carry.
